Unusual Weller Louwelsa Mug, 5.75” Tall, Artist Signed
This Louwelsa mug has a very unusual handle that appears to have been applied after the greenware was removed from its mold and before it was fired.
This mug is stylistically more like Rookwood based on the handle shape.
It has the Louwelsa Weller half circle mark on its bottom and the mold shape “563”.
However, all of the Weller mugs that I have seen in mold number “563” have a molded handle already attached (see my other auctions for another Weller“563” mug).
Given this fact, this might be a test run to create pottery that was more similar to its Rookwood competitor.
The mug has a crack to its handle.
Other than that no other defect were noted.
Artist signed “ER” for Eugene Roberts along the right side of the mugs artwork. No repairs were observed when using an industrial black light on it.
